LA8 Taking Over Hungry Bear and Cheq 100

Registration for the Hungry Bear 100 and Chequamegon 100 races will open early in the new year. As soon as I wrap up the insurance and file permits, I will open registration for both events. Announcements for registration will go out on social media channels and here at this Life Above 8 website. Beginning in 2022, the events will be owned by Life Above 8 Productions, an LLC I created to take ownership of the Terrene Events. Tim stopped by my home office the day after Christmas and we recorded the video below to explain the transition in some more personal detail.

For those who don’t know me, I moved from Milwaukee up to Seeley in December of 2021 with my wie Liz and our dog Cowboy. I had recently retired as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Bike Fed, where I had a long history running bike rides such as the Ride Across Wisconsin, Santa Cycle Rampage, Polish Moon Ride, etc. I moved Up North to take the job of Executive Director of the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Association after Ron Bergen retired. While at CAMBA, Tim and I were working on a deal for CAMBA to take over his events.

But not long after I started working for CAMBA, a number of the board of directors resigned and my vision for the organization’s future and the expectations of the board were no longer in alignment. I resigned from CAMBA after only about 6 months, but Liz, Cowboy and I are still thrilled to be living here. Even though I resigned from CAMBA, I helped out Peter with the Chequamegon MTB Festival, helped the Seeley Lions with the Pre Fat Race and shadowed Tim and Odia at their events.

You can read the post event report I made for the 2021 Hungry Bear while I was still working for CAMBA here. You can read my Chequamegon 100 report here.

CAMBA still has not announced a new Executive Director, and when I last spoke with their board president, he told me even when they get a new person in place, he and the board are not sure about CAMBA owning events. So in the interim, I agreed to create an LLC to take over the Terrence Events, and I will manage them. I am stoked to say that Time and Odia will still be at the events! I will just foster the Hungry Bear and Chequamegon 100 for a while.

I don’t have any plans to make big changes, but I do want to add a few tweaks. Anyone who has ridden the Santa Cycle Rampage or Polish Moon Ride I started in Milwaukee will know my event style should integrate well with the semi DIY family reunion feel Tim’s events have. And the event profits will still be given to local non-profits, used to promote greater equity and diversity in our sport and to promote riding and local businesses in the area.

I will keep everyone updated as I lock down insurance and file the permits.

And for those wondering about trail current trail conditions, we just got about six inches of perfect snow on top of a decent base, so the Birkie, North End and Seeley Ski Trails and CAMBA fat bike trails should be groomed to perfection soon! I recently had a fall and those injuries have me unable to bike or ski for a bit, but as soon as I am back in the saddle, Cowboy and Seeley Dave will return to our roles as hyperborian reporters for local trail conditions.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year.

I’m stoked that you will be shepherding these events for a bit! You’ve got air time on the show whenever you need it to let folks know what the buzz is. I expect great things will be happening in the Northwoods.
